Montebello Fire Department

Our Story

The Montebello Fire Department was commission on June 20, 1922, with Edward M. Schaak as its first Chief. This was the second year after the City was incorporated and Montebello’s population was estimated to 3,000 residents. The fire equipment consisted of one Hirsch Combination Engine and Pumper and it was kept at the rented fire station located at 309 West Whittier Blvd. Volunteers were referred to as “Call Men” and were depended on to handle fires and other emergencies. Their pay ranged from $1.50 to $5.00 per run. Between August of 1922 and the year’s end only four fire alarms were noted in the records.

Since these humble beginnings, the Montebello Fire Department services approximately 64,000 residents and operates 1 fire truck, 3 fire engines, 1 battalion vehicle. There are 3 fire stations: Station 55 (HQ), Station 56, and Station 57. In addition there are Fire Administration offices in City Hall providing administrative support to the Fire Department. In 2020 approximately 6,500 fire and medical calls were recorded.
